Whose Values, Which Priorities? Centering Cross-Cultural Effectiveness in Divisive Times
This episode Translocating Inclusion, features Rosetta Lee, educator, speaker, consultant, and facilitator. Given the ongoing scrutiny faced by inclusion work, we will explore how to move from defensive reactions rooted in declarations and binaries toward effective action. Whose values are centered? Which priorities are driving decisions? How can cross-cultural effectiveness help navigate difference instead of collapsing into divisiveness? Join us as we answer these and other questions!
As we navigate through an ever-shifting regulatory landscape, reactive discourse, and tense polarization, institutions dedicated to fostering inclusive cultures are left asking: Is it best to preemptively rename or restructure diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives? How can we develop and implement inclusive policies and practices that are truly effective and sustainable? What to do when prioritizing the inclusion of different viewpoints might jeopardize institutional values and moral imperatives?
For this episode of Translocating Inclusion, we are joined by Rosetta Lee, Faculty and Professional Outreach Specialist at the Seattle Girls School. Drawing on Rosetta’s expertise as a trained bioethicist, educator, speaker, and longtime facilitator in identity, equity, cross-cultural effectiveness, and belonging, we will discuss how cross-cultural intelligence can serve as a pivotal framework for addressing these and other challenges. Rosetta will provide recommendations on how organizations can prioritize ethical decision-making, shared values, and common priorities while reducing reactive engagement that may lead to misunderstandings, loss of trust, or harm to community members. This conversation will explore what it looks like to navigate the tensions between what we believe, what we say, and what we do in the face of external pressures on the cross-cultural effectiveness work that is imperative to implement in this moment.
Whether you are an inclusion and belonging practitioner, educator, or organizational leader, this episode offers both challenge and encouragement: challenge to interrogate the assumptions embedded in your approach, and encouragement to develop the cross-cultural intelligence needed to answer the call of this moment effectively.
